Route 109 Transportation Improvement Project Update - July 2016

The Route 109 Transportation Improvement Project is a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT) project. The project will focus on improvements to the commercial corridor along Main Street in Medway from Holliston Street to Franklin and Milford Streets. The project includes reconstruction, resurfacing, sidewalks, signage, street lighting and other aesthetic upgrades. DOT manages the contractor and all aspects of the project.  The Town of Medway is making every effort to ensure that we receive accurate and ongoing information about project status and share that information with residents and businesses.

This is the 3rd in a series of ongoing updates that will be provided throughout the duration of this project.  Real-time updates will be provided by the contractor and a town consultant dedicated to monitoring project progress.  This information will be posted to the town website, social media channels, monthly newsletter, and sent to project update subscribers via email.  Subscribe here.  There will be Highway Signs located at each end of the project route alerting motorists to current conditions. There will be signage along the route informing motorists that businesses along the route are open as usual.  Send any questions you have about this project to route109@townofmedway.org . Every effort will be made to answer inquiries within one business day.

Town Officials attended a second pre-construction meeting with DOT and the selected contractor A.F. Amorello & Sons Inc. on July 12th and were provided the details below.  Also in attendance were members of the Route 109 Transportation Improvement Communications Task Force, which is chaired by Selectman Dennis Crowley and comprises town department heads, residents, and members of the business community. Highlights from the pre-construction meeting are as follows:

2016-Clear trees, move utilities, install drainage, culvert replacement.

Work will begin this week (July 18) and will conclude in December, weather permitting.  When work pauses during the winter any trenching will be overlaid and the road will be passable.

In early August drainage work is scheduled to begin in two locations: east of Holliston Street near Walgreens and near the Choate Park area.  Drainage work will occur primarily on the right side of Route 109 when traveling west. Utility work is scheduled to begin at the same time.  In addition, 65 trees will be removed and the relocation of 54 utility poles will begin.  Gas mains will be relocated as necessary.

Minimal lane closures and detours are expected in 2016.  It is expected that there will be 2 lanes open with few and brief instances of only 1 lane open.  Should it become necessary to shift to 1 lane, priority will be given to east bound traffic in the morning and west bound traffic in the afternoon.  Throughout the entire project the Medway Police Department will be monitoring traffic issues and will be onsite ensuring traffic safety.

Construction is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Impact to traffic will be monitored and if necessary the schedule will be adjusted to minimize impact on rush hour traffic.

2017-Widen the road, adjust contours, and install street lights/signals.

Work will begin in early April

The bulk of road work will occur in 2017.  This phase of the project will have the most impact on daily travel for residents and businesses.

Full depth excavation is scheduled to begin, tentatively at the west end of 109 near the Community Church.

It is expected that this phase of the project will have a significant impact on traffic.  There will likely be periods of time when it will be necessary to shift to 1 lane of traffic.  Throughout the entire project the Medway Police Department will be monitoring traffic issues and will be onsite ensuring traffic safety and directing any necessary detours.

It is important to note that construction conditions can change without notice.  Every effort will be made to communicate these changes to Medway residents and businesses in real time.

2018-Install sidewalks, paving, plantings.

Work is expected to begin in early April and will conclude in late November or early December, weather permitting. When work pauses during the winter the road surface will be smooth and passable.

2019-Punchlist items.

Work is expected to begin in early April and will conclude when the project is completed.  The expected project completion date is currently scheduled for June 6, 2019.

Town Officials will continue to update the community as updated information becomes available.
