June Spotlight Artist, Lindsey Blenkhorn!

June Spotlight Artist: Medway High School graduating senior, Lindsey Blenkhorn!

Welcome to June’s installment of The Artist Spotlight! This month we will put the spotlight on Lindsey Blenkhorn. Lindsay is a senior at Medway High School who has excelled in the arts, not only painting, drawing and ceramics, but also Dance and Theatre. Lindsay spans the artistic spectrum with her talents, devotion and passion for creating! Lindsay is inspired by her art teachers and encouraged to think outside the box leaving the guided instructions behind and venturing out on her own to create original pieces of art, a well known trademark of all artists. Lindsay’s advice to beginner artists, “Don’t be afraid to try new mediums, and don’t be afraid to “mess up”.

Talk about your art?
I have enjoyed doing art since I was little. I always loved the craft table in preschool, and I still love sitting at a table with a group of friends creating and crafting.

I like to work in still life’s and to draw pictures of friends and family. In high school I have taken: basic art, fine arts, advanced fine arts, portfolio, and ceramics classes. I like drawing realistically, a process called realism. I like painting abstractly. I also enjoy ceramics. My favorite ceramic pieces that I made this year are a “white objects” still life and a ceramic dragon. (shown below)

What is your favorite art medium to work with and why?
My favorite mediums to work with are vine charcoal and colored pencil. I like using vine charcoal because of how forgiving it is and I like making pieces without color. I like using colored pencils when I am making something with color because I like how you can build up and layer colors.

What inspires you?

My art teachers, friends, and family inspire me and give me ideas for my art, and I am inspired by nature.

How have the teachers at the high school encouraged you in your art
work?
The art teachers are always there to help if I get stuck, they let us be creative to make the projects our own. In the beginner art classes the prompts are more specific, but throughout high school the prompts get less specific; we have freedom to make original artwork.

What makes your artwork unique? There is a lot of freedom in the mediums we use. There have been projects that I have made unique by using objects that mean something to me personally, for example, bringing in my own still life objects from home. For the acrylic painting of a shoe, I picked a sneaker based on the color scheme and style that I liked.

How long have you lived in Medway? I have lived in Medway for my whole life.

How has art changed since covid with instruction being online and
remote?
I liked being able to work alone in my own environment, where it’s free from distraction and noise. At school it can be hard to focus on my own work when I am surrounded by other artists. I like to work independently, but being alone I found it hard to stay motivated. Also, understanding instructions through a screen can be difficult. In the end I still learned and my art improved.

What role do you see art playing in your future?
I am still not sure what kind of career I want to pursue, but an art teacher is one option I am considering.

What advice would you give younger art students ?

“Don’t be afraid to try new mediums, and don’t be afraid to “mess up”. When you try new things, they might not turn out how you want the first time, but that doesn’t mean you are bad at using that medium and should never use it again. You won’t get the results you want on the first try, but with practice you might find that you really enjoy that medium.”

What are some other activities you are involved in?

I have been dancing since preschool. I take classes at
Medway Dance Authority, I dance in the musicals at school and I do
backstage crew for theatrical plays at the high school for the past few years. I also spend summers volunteering as a studio assistant for the art camp at Danforth Art Museum.

Lindsey is a young lady of many talents and artistic abilities and a valuable member of our arts community here in Medway.

Congratulations on your high school graduation Lindsey and to all Medway High Seniors! Go make your dreams come true.

Remember life is a lot like Art, it is what you make it to be!
