Lt. Detective Matthew Reardon Retires after 28 years of service to Medway Police Department

Lieutenant Detective Matthew Reardon retires today after 28 years of service to the Medway Police Department and 30 years of public service. Lieutenant Reardon began his career as a paramedic working for a private ambulance company before moving to the Medway Fire Department, working as a dispatcher for the Franklin Police Department then joining Medway as a dispatcher in 1995. Matt attended the Boylston Police Academy in 2001 beginning his career as a patrol officer.

Matt has earned a reputation as one of the finest investigators in our region. He began working sexual assault and B&E cases in 2008, received recognition for work he conducted investigating on-line child predators which led to many arrests and eventually to the important Massachusetts SJC Decision Commonwealth v. Rock, 3 Mass. App. Ct. 1134, 2013 WL 2371410.

During the early 2010s, Lieutenant Reardon was attached to a Federal Drug Task Force where he was involved in many important illegal narcotic investigations. He was appointed a full-time detective by Chief Allan Tingley in 2015, Sergeant in 2017 and Lieutenant during 2020.

He became known for leading multi-jurisdiction task forces targeting breaking and entry suspects with great success, and for closing many cases which many would have written off. His tenacity led to the arrest of a child pornographer operating in a neighboring town as well as a child pornographer and abuser who lived in Medway. Many search warrants were served and charges brought against individuals victimizing children due to his work.

Not as well known were his efforts to help victims of scams. He worked tirelessly for many months to not only identify the individual responsible for scamming a local couple out of their entire mortgage down payment but also retrieve almost all of the stolen funds enabling the couple to move forward with their lives. The suspect was arrested in Florida and brought to Massachusetts for trial.

Investigating crime successfully takes doggedness, dedication, and an enormous work ethic, all qualities Matt possesses in abundance.

From the very beginning, Matt was dedicated to policing and supporting police officers. He was a charter member of the Medway Police Honor Guard, represented the department at far too many police funerals, and was an active member of the Medway Police Association executive board for many years.
