Re:  Medway Receives $2,750,000 in Funding for Central Water Treatment Facility Improvements

Town of Medway - The Town of Medway is excited to share that it received fantastic news from the Offices of United States Senator Edward Markey, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Congressman Jake Auchincloss. The Town was recently notified that the U.S. House and Senate passed the Community Project Funding (CPF) proposal filed by Congressman Auchincloss which included $2,750,000 in funding for Medway’s Central Water Treatment Facility Improvements. The omnibus budget bill was signed into law by President Biden and the funding will soon be heading to Medway.

The Town is most grateful to our Federal Legislative Delegation, and especially Congressman Auchincloss for his stewardship of this critical infrastructure project. Maryjane White, the Chair of the Medway Select Board, commended the Congressman, as well as Senators Markey and Warren for their unwavering support of Medway and the needs of our community. “Medway is most fortunate to have Legislators at both the State and Federal levels who understand Medway and are always championing our projects and priorities” said Chairperson White.

“This infusion of millions of dollars in new federal funding will support the Town of Medway’s water treatment facility project, which will be essential for providing Medway’s residents clean, safe drinking water for decades to come,” said Senator Markey. “I am proud to have worked alongside Senator Warren and Congressman Auchincloss in securing this funding for the Town of Medway, and I will continue to fight for federal funding for Massachusetts communities to advance local infrastructure projects.”

“The Massachusetts delegation and I have been fighting hard for additional federal investments for the Commonwealth, and I am glad we secured $2.75 million for Medway’s Centralized Water Treatment Facility,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren. “This critical funding will help ensure the town can update its water infrastructure and provide the safe drinking water our community needs and deserves.”

The Central Water Treatment Facility is being undertaken to address elevated levels of iron and manganese in the Town’s public drinking supply wells. The plant will consist of a treatment process area, a small administrative/operations area, a vehicle storage garage, and other site improvements. Once the treatment plan is constructed, the Town will receive immediate benefits related to public health through improved water quality.

“Clean water is essential. This funding helps Medway guarantee safe water for generations to come,” said Congressman Jake Auchincloss.

At the Annual Town Meeting on May 9, 2022, the Town will ask voters to approve funding for the construction of the treatment facility on Populatic Street, as well as additional satellite wells at Oakland and Village well sites and a new water transmission line from Oakland well to the new facility. The project began at the 2018 Annual Town Meeting when voters approved the construction of a transmission line and satellite well at Populatic Street.  Medway residents have previously funded Project Management and Designer Services at the 2019 Annual Town Meeting. Medway currently does not have a central treatment facility but instead performs disinfection at each of the well sites.

The Town of Medway would also like to recognize Senate President Karen Spilka, Representative Jeffrey N. Roy, and Representative Brian Murray for their efforts in protecting Medway’s health and infrastructure.

"Access to safe drinking water is a human right, and an essential service that government must provide to every resident of our community," said Senate President Karen E. Spilka. "Securing funding for the Town of Medway’s water treatment facility project is an example of how close partnership across federal, state, and local government can result in a big impact for a town and a significant benefit for residents. I’d like to thank Representative Auchincloss and Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren for their efforts to carry forward a federal response so that all Medway residents can know that the water coming out of their tap is safe.”

“I am thrilled to see that Medway will get some of the funding needed for its central water treatment facility that will provide for the needs for adequate drinking water and fire protection,” said Rep. Jeffrey N. Roy (D-Franklin). “This project will help protect Medway’s health and infrastructure and improve the outdated piping in the current system. I offer heartfelt thanks to our federal delegation for reaching out to the community and for working hard to secure these funds.”

The plant will allow the Town to consistently deliver clean drinking water in compliance with Federal and State regulations while maintaining an adequate supply.
