IRS Phone Scam

A message from the Medway Police:

It has come to our attention that IRS Scam calls are starting up and that these calls are again targeting Medway residents. Typically the scam starts with a phone call from an individual claiming to be an IRS agent who either holds an arrest warrant for the intended victim or they are starting legal proceedings against that person. The caller will then advise the matter can be taken care of with a direct wire payment via services such as Western Union or Money Gram.  Anyone who you do not know personally who requests that you send them money this way is a scammer.  Money transferred by wire is untraceable.  Call us for advice before you send any money this way.

These calls are always scams.  The IRS does not operate in this manner ever.  They contact persons who owe back taxes/fees/penalties etc. via mail.  They do not call directly and they do not demand immediate payment to withdraw criminal charges.
