Barry Smith, Medway's Water & Sewer Superintendent

Water, once an abundant resource, is becoming a more valuable commodity due to droughts and overuse. Responsible for over 80 miles of water mains and 45 miles of sewer mains, with some of the current infrastructure dated back to the early 1900s, the Water Department is tasked with the control and movement of water in the Town of Medway. Overseeing it all, is Barry Smith, Water & Sewer Superintendent.

Mr. Smith manages the Town's infrastructure through a combination of strategic planning, project execution, and conservation efforts. His daily responsibilities include overseeing the operations of his department which include seven staff members; one assistant, and six technicians. As the Superintendent, he is in charge of coordinating ongoing projects that will improve our water system. Of high priority is his involvement in the design and project management of the new water treatment facility being built in Medway over the next few years. 

A typical day in the Water Department consists of water services management, fire hydrant maintenance and repairs, water meter repairs, overseeing water production from our well sites, the upkeep of our water infrastructure which includes Populatic Street well, Oakland Street, Village Street, and Industrial Park well Lovering Street and High Street tanks. Also, oversees the maintenance of the sewer collection system throughout the Town. In addition to his daily managerial responsibilities, Mr. Smith also participates on the Water/Sewer Advisory Board, the New Water Facility Board. He is responsible for all state reporting and actively works with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He is also active in the local community and attends the Charles River Pollution Control meetings.

Barry got his start in local government in Upton, MA where he worked as a member of the water department. Within Upton’s water department there is a wastewater division. Barry worked on drinking water and the wastewater plant. During his time at the Upton Water Department, he gained valuable knowledge. He took this experience to an opportunity within the Town of Uxbridge’s Water Department. He worked as a Water Technician for ten months. Looking for an opportunity to grow, he saw an opportunity with the Town Medway’s Water Department and joined our team in 2014. Water operator (lateral move with an opportunity to grow) he joined our team in 2014 as a Water Operator. Within 10 short months, he was promoted to Water Superintendent. He worked within the role for two years, he took over as Deputy Director for 2 years then moved back to Water Superintendent.

Barry lives in Whitinsville, MA with his daughter, Madison, who is 11.  He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology.  Barry can always be seen in the stands or along the sidelines of his daughter’s cheerleading competitions, softball games, and band concerts.  He makes it a priority not to miss an event.  In their downtime, he and his daughter enjoy the great outdoors. They can often be found with their dog, Krejci at various campgrounds throughout New England. Barry is an avid Boston Bruins fan and holds season tickets. Whenever he has free time, you can find him on the Cape with a fishing rod in hand.
