DPW Building Receives Zero Energy Certification Through the International Living Future Institute

The Medway DPW building was recently awarded Zero Energy Certification through the International Living Future Institute. Zero Energy Certification is recognized worldwide as one of the highest aspirations in energy performance in the built environment.

Being a Zero Energy Building (Net Zero) means it produces enough renewable power to meet its annual energy consumption needs. To date, the solar roof array and solar parking canopy produced 931 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity. Excess energy is sent back to the grid.

Additionally, the project utilized the SMART program (Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target) - MA Solar Incentive. Through that incentive, the solar arrays have earned nearly $150,000, which is used to offset the cost of electricity from the grid when the solar panels aren't producing power.

FUN FACTS:

  • To date, 558 tons of CO2 emissions have been avoided.
  • The energy produced by the DPW building is the equivalent of off-setting 82,000 gallons of gasoline.
  • The equivalent of 28,000 nights of powering the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.
  • The equivalent of charging 39,000 electric cars or 172 million cell phones.
