Town of Medway Spotlight | Allison Potter Assistant Town Administrator

Allison Potter

“Be happy not because everything is good, but because you can see the good side of everything!”  Here at the Town of Medway, we try to remain positive in everything we do.  We always have a smile on our face, and exude positivity……it can be contagious!

In our continued effort to lift the veil and introduce ourselves to you, we bring to you our Assistant Town Administrator, Allison Potter.  Allison has worked for the Town of Medway since 2008 and is a great team leader, working alongside Michael Boynton, the Board of Selectmen, and Liz Langley.

1.  What led you to being the Assistant Town                   Administrator?

Prior to the Town of Medway, I worked for the Town of Framingham where I was a Principal Clerk in the town clerk’s office.  My responsibilities there involved customer service related to vital records (recording and issuing birth, death, marriage certificates) and voter registration. Prior positions also included Elections Coordinator in the clerk’s office and the Town Manager’s Assistant.  At the Dedham Public Schools, I was the Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools with a heavy emphasis on Human Resources.  My start in local government began because I was curious about how local government works.  My first job working for a municipality was in the Framingham Town Clerk’s office.  I was fascinated by it.  I started in October right before a presidential election and the office was in a flurry of activity as people called and stopped in to make sure they were registered to vote and confirm their voting location.  It was fun!  I held a few positions in Framingham before moving over to the school side of operations in Dedham.  After a few years there, I missed the town-side of government and started to look for another opportunity in municipal government.  I was excited when I was offered a position in Medway, and cannot believe it has already been ten years!

2.  What do you love about working for the Town of Medway

As soon as I started to work for the Town, I saw how invested the residents and businesses are in this community.  It is great to serve a community that has such pride in it.  I love that there are so many community events and celebrations held every year.  I also enjoy working with my fellow employees.  The level of passion and dedication that they bring to their jobs and their regard for the town is truly motivational.  They absolutely share the community’s pride.

3.  What do you spend most of your day doing?

One thing that I can count on with this job is that every day is different.  Broadly, I work with the Town Administrator to carry out the policies set by the Board of Selectmen, to support operations and assist with all sorts of special projects.  One of the more recent projects is the ongoing Parks Improvements Project taking place at Choate Park, Oakland Park, and the tennis courts at the Middle School.  Without fail, I get to learn something new every day.

4.  What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I like to be outdoors and active, be it running, hiking, or swimming.  I’m a devoted fan of literature, a remnant of my college days as an English major.  And, of course, I always enjoy spending time with my family.

5.  Favorite place to travel?

I try to visit northern Vermont at least once a year.  Nothing beats the view of Lake Champlain in Burlington or hiking Camel’s Hump.  I also like exploring new places, so I’m happy to go just about anywhere.  One of my goals is to visit all fifty states.  I’d like to make it to the Pacific Northwest in the near future.
