Town of Medway Spotlight | Liz Langley, Administrative Assistant to the Office of the Town Administrator

Liz Langley

We are very excited to proudly highlight Liz Langley, in this, our second edition of The Town of Medway Spotlight.  Liz is the Administrative Assistant to the Office of the Town Administrator. Handling her day-to-day job duties, Liz not only gets things done but goes above and beyond to serve the individuals she works with.  It is clear that Liz is committed to the work she does and to the individuals she serves.  From engaging with residents – asking questions, answering questions, having conversations, and being active in the community, Liz is always willing to do what needs to be done.

What led you to being the Administrative Assistant to the Office of the Town Administrator?

I had been working at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston for six years when the Administrative Assistant to the Office of the Town Administrator became available. The daily battle with the commuter rail system often led to three-hour commutes and I knew I had to make a change.  Although I truly loved my role, working with faculty and students at BIDMC, the commute became too much.  My priority had always been my family and I knew I had to find the perfect balance between work and family.

What do you love about working for the Town of Medway?

What I love most about working for the Town of Medway are the interactions with all the residents, business owners, and Town of Medway and School Department staff.  Each day brings someone or something new and different.  The Town Administrator and Assistant Town Administrator are not only incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated but, are also amazing people as well!  In addition, The Board of Selectmen and other Board and Committee members are awe inspiring in their commitment to make Medway the best it can be.

What do you spend most of your day doing?

Not commuting! My less than ten minute commute time is awesome!  Each day, working in the Town Administrator’s Office is different and rewarding; the variety of tasks is motivating. My role includes directly supporting both the Town Administrator and Assistant Town Administrator.  My responsibilities include preparing agendas, documents, and meeting minutes for the bi-monthly Board of Selectmen’s meetings, tracking Board and Committee appointments and re-appointments, administering license applications that fall under the purview of the Board of Selectmen and fielding and answering questions from residents.  My least favorite task in my role is processing bills for payment!

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

My favorite thing to do outside of work is spend time with family and friends. As you will learn later in my spotlight, our family truly knows the importance and need to appreciate and take advantage of the time you have together. I also have a very special place in my heart for my ten-year old dog, Murphy.  I enjoy taking him for walks.

Favorite place to travel?

Any beach!

More about Liz

After graduating from the Boston College School of Nursing, I began my career as a Registered Nurse at the New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center at University Hospital in Boston, MA. I later moved onto CORE, a healthcare management company in Boston working in many roles including the Director of Client & Customer Service, Director of Licensed Services and Senior Business Analyst.  My husband and I started a family and were blessed with three beautiful boys.  When my youngest son, Shawn, was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in 2000, I was grateful to be able to take a leave of absence from the corporate world to focus and care for him, my other boys and my husband.  Unfortunately in 2006, Shawn lost his battle with cancer.  After some much needed time, I returned to work on a part-time basis here in Medway initially working in the Treasurer Collector’s office and then moving to support the Town Administrator where I was fortunate to be able to be close to my family.  In 2011, I returned to the clinical setting of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) where I took on a full-time role for six years in the Center for Education as the Program Administrator for Undergraduate Medical Education.  It was very rewarding working with the students from Harvard Medical School (HMS) and faculty at BIDMC.  While working there I was awarded the student nominated L. James Wiczai Award for Leadership, Excellence, and Innovation in Medical Education.  I was truly taken aback by this recognition as working with the students was a real honor.

It was hard to leave the students and faculty at BIDMC but it became clear that a closer commute was a priority. I feel so very fortunate to be working again in Medway at Town Hall and with the staff that make up the Town Administrator’s Office.  They are all such incredibly, amazing people and as a resident of Medway, I appreciate their dedication to make Medway one of the best communities to raise my family!
