Button Cell Battery Recycling Program Benefits the Alex Handy Memorial and Scholarship Foundation

Battery recycling aims to reduce the number of batteries being disposed as solid waste.  Batteries contain a number of heavy metals and toxic chemicals and disposing them with trash contributes to soil contamination and water pollution.  Button batteries are commonly used in hearing aids, key FOBs, watches, cameras, and calculators.

Button battery collection boxes are located throughout Medway and an additional benefit of recycling your batteries at one of our collection boxes is that we are awarded $100 for each pound of batteries that we recycle with Wheelabrator Technologies.  Medway has participated in this program for the last three years.  So far, each year we have donated the proceeds from this program to the Alex Handy Memorial and Scholarship Foundation.  Last year Medway residents raised $600.  Project Alex promotes youth safety by donating bike helmets, painted crosswalks in Medway, and awarding scholarships to Medway students.

Please consider dropping your used button batteries at one of these locations in town:

  • Town Hall
  • Department of Public Services
  • Medway Recycling Center
  • Medway Public Library
  • Senior Center
  • Long Distance Tire
  • Direct Tire
  • George’s Automotive

Alkaline batteries are not to be recycled and should be discarded with trash in a yellow bag.  Regular batteries can be recycled at the Recycling Center for free.  Other mercury items also accepted at the Recycling Center include thermostats and thermometers.
