Charles River Meadowlands Initiative

CHARLES RIVER MEADOWLANDS INITIATIVE 

The Charles River Meadowlands Initiative (CRMI) is an effort among citizens and local government officials in the Towns of Franklin, Bellingham and Medway to work together with Federal and State officials to improve access to, management of, and enjoyment of more than 500 acres of beautiful land and natural resources along the Charles River.  This is land protected by the US Army Corps of Engineers under the Charles River Natural Valley flood control project first established in 1977 covering 8,095 acres in 16 eastern Massachusetts communities along the upper and middle areas of the Charles River.  

During the month of April, the CRMI and its planning/engineering consultants from BETA Group, held community forums in each of the three towns. The sessions provided information to the public about the potential for trails and passive recreation developments in and around the flood control lands in the three towns controlled by the US Army Corps of Engineers as well as adjacent public open space and conservation properties.  Each event included displays of maps, a brief introduction about CRMI and a presentation by BETA about the three town study area. Funding for the study was provided by a special state appropriation.

A final summary report will be prepared by BETA.  The scope of that study includes assessing the various lands within the study area, identifying
