Medway Approved to Form Veterans Services District with Area Towns
Medway, MA- The Town of Medway received approval from the Department of Veterans’ Services on August 12 to form a Veterans’ Services District with Ashland, Holliston and Hopkinton. The conditional approval is granted for a one year period commencing August 18, 2011. The four town district will provide veterans’ services and benefits to eligible dependents residing in Holliston, Hopkinton, Medway and Ashland.
Board of Selectmen Chairman Richard Dunne said:
We are very pleased to be able to move forward with our plan for a veterans’ services district. It is an example of communities working together to offer quality services.
Ashland, Holliston, Hopkinton and Medway met for several months to draft a plan for a veterans’ services district and apply to the state to form this district. The collaboration was spurred by the retirement of a long-time veterans’ agent that served the towns of Medway, Holliston and Hopkinton. Ashland’s agent also notified the town he would be leaving his position.
The purpose for the district is to combine resources to save money while offering the maximum level of service to the towns’ veterans and their dependents. Without the district, the towns would each be responsible for hiring a full-time agent.
Town Administrator Suzanne Kennedy commented:
The benefit of this combined effort will be a well coordinated and effective veterans’ services department at the local level. I fully expect the residents who make use of this service will be pleased by their experience.
