What requires a Permit?  
It is unlawful to construct, reconstruct, alter, repair, remove or demolish a building or structure or to change the use or occupancy of a building or structure or to install or alter any equipment for which revision is made or the installation of which is regulated by 780 CMR without first filing a written application with the building official and obtaining the required permit. Can a homeowner obtain a building, electrical, plumbing or gas application and perform their own work?  
  • Homeowner may obtain their own building and electrical permits and can perform their own work. 
  • Homeowners CANNOT obtain a plumbing or gas permit and CANNOT perform their own work – permits can only be obtained and work performed by a licensed Plumber or Gas Fitter.


How much is the permit fee?
Click here for fees.  This fee includes your permit and all related inspections for the work being performed. All fees are set by the Medway Board of Selectmen.



Who issues a permit for a residential/commercial boundary fences or pool fence?  
The Medway Police has the guidelines for all residential or commercial boundary fences. They will be glad to give you a copy of their Informational Sheet and answer any questions. You may contact them at 508-533-3212.

Do I need a permit for a Temporary Tent?
Yes, a permit is required for a temporary tent which may be erected for a specified amount of time.

How do I get an application for a permit?
You may obtain all applications from the building department during our normal business hours or click here.



What is the money from permit fee used for?  
The money from the permit fee is used to pay for the building department’s overhead and inspectors services.  Any funds remaining at the end of the year are returned to the town’s general fund.



Where can I get an application for a special permit or a variance?
The application is available here or may be obtained from the Medway Town Clerk Office.
